DL&W Vass Gap Tunnel
The DL&W's Vass Gap Tunnel was single tracked in 1948 with the closing of Manunka Chunk Tower and the discontinuance of DL&W passenger service on the "old road". Local youngsters used to speak of the farmer with the shotgun who farmed a broad plateau on the mountain top. It was safer facing the bats and constant water flow in the tunnel than confronting the farmer who lived at the top of the step farm road from Route 46.
